It has been 14 months since God - in his mercy and graciousness - inspired, prepared, and enabled The Center - Memphis to become a reality.

Last week, God gave me the joy of studying, writing, and teaching on gratitude (see Gratitude — The Best Attitude). As I learned and worked with others on how to regularly practice gratitude, I realized that I can attribute absolutely everything good in my life to God (1 Corinthians 4:7), and this is particularly true as it relates to how God started The Center. It’s a joy to consider all God has done to start and sustain The Center.

The Center does not exist without the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Therefore, any list of gratitude must begin with the source and foundation of gratitude, our triumphant Triune God. God made me and has molded me through family, friends, mentors, and coworkers. God has used my strengths and weaknesses, joys and sufferings, faithfulness and sins to shape me to who I am today. Though still sinful, God has redeemed my life (Psalm 103:4) through the blood of His Son, Jesus (Colossians 1:20) and made me new (2 Corinthians 5:7). I am grateful that my life is not my own (1 Corinthians 6:19) and that His Holy Spirit renews me day by day as I study His word and interact with His people.

With full understanding that everything good is from Heaven (John 3:27), I gratefully list the following specific people and ways that God has used to start and sustain The Center.

  • For the 22 Center - Memphis Advisors who have encouraged, counseled, and given generously of their time and resources for the sake of our mission For the dozens of other people who counseled us on how to form a faith and work ministry.
  • For the 50+ people and organizations who have given financially to support our mission.
  • For Richard Simmons III and The Center in Birmingham who provided a model, a path, and support for our ministry.  For the team of disciple makers and leaders in Birmingham that pray with us and for us every week.
  • For all of our Spirit inspired and truth filled guest speakers including: Sheng Zhou, Michael Rhodes, Rob Carter, Larry Jensen, Michael Davis, Rob Thompson, Kem Wilson, Roy “Soup” Campbell, Ronnie Stevens, Greg Spillyards, Rufus Smith and Russ VanderSteeg.
  • For the 250+ different people who have attended our weekly sessions and industry roundtables — especially for the 50 that attend regularly and “bring their business” to help us all learn.
  • For the over 1,000 people who have read our lessons and interacted with our content online.
  • For those who send feedback and questions to help us shape future teaching.
  • For 70+ people who have trusted the Center for guidance with their careers, workplace relationships, and entrepreneurial ideas.
  • For 30+ people who have changed jobs, taken new opportunities at their current companies or are starting a new venture.
  • For the companies that have trusted the Center to help them find talented people.
  • For the start-ups in progress now that will create new opportunities.
  • For Blake Lam who has designed, built, and manages all of our digital content.
  • For Carter Snodgrass, who helps us think, write, proof, set-up, and films our sessions.
  • For our podcast team of Brantley Davidson, Dan Butler and Will Walker.
  • For an incredible wife, and family that have been patient and supportive with the significant changes in our lives.
  • For Katie Davidson who helped us sell our house and find another that immediately felt like home.
  • For all of the friends and neighbors who have assisted us during our transition.
  • For the opportunity to study God’s word as a way of work and solution to help others better know their purpose and use their gifts.
  • For all my coworkers (bosses, mentors and teammates) throughout my 35 years in business who have taught me, inspired me, and been patient with my flaws and encouraging of my gifts over the last 35 years.
  • For the leaders who went before us in other cities and created great models for Faith and work ministry - especially those at Redeemer City to City, Praxis, Faith Driven Entrepreneur and The Denver Institute for Faith and Work.
  • For those who produce great theology of work content including Theology of Work, Made To Flourish, The Institute for Faith Work and Economics, Fuller De Pree Center, and Desiring God
  • For the people and partnerships that God will soon add to our mission.

For all these things, and much more than I can think or name, I am deeply grateful to God.
