Belief At Work

Belief At Work

The person who knows himself to be a child of God and an heir of eternity has a very different view of things in this life and world.”  - Dr. Martyn Lloyd-Jones

One person stays in the same job without seeking a new job — even though they understand their responsibilities and pay in their current job are below their qualifications.

Another person constantly takes risks to seek more responsibility and more income — even though they understand they don’t meet the requirements and don’t need the income.

Each person is guided by their own beliefs.

Belief Determines What We Think And Do

We all perceive the world through the lens of our own beliefs, and each person’s beliefs are shaped individually and are formed uniquely over time.  An individual’s beliefs are shaped by their collective developmental, environmental, emotional, analytical, rational, and spiritual inputs and experiences.

Even the way we view the decisions of others is based on what we believe. Some readers may have believed the person in the first scenario is wasting their talents and is too passive, while others may have believed that the person in the second scenario was being too aggressive. Either perspective is rooted in the reader’s fundamental beliefs - about work, life, and even themselves.

Our beliefs are also based on what (and who) we trust. Trust is an attitude of dependence in response to a thing or person’s perceived reliability. Trust both informs our beliefs and is informed by our beliefs.

Take a quick inventory of your deepest values and beliefs. Where are you most likely (and least likely) to place your trust? Is it in your family, in money, in a mentor, or in God – or a combination thereof? Whatever your answer, you will find it starts to paint a picture of what you really believe and the approach you take to major life decisions.

Since 2006, Simon Sinek has been saying, “People don't buy what you do, they buy why you do it.” His TED Talk, How Great Leaders Inspire Action, is still one of the most watched TED Talks of all time. He proclaims you must know your “why” to be successful, why start with why. Sinek makes clear that the inverse is also true, that people do not respond positively toward you unless you know why you do what you do.

Belief Leads To Rewarding Work

The most mission-focused and strategically aligned leader in the history of the world is Jesus, and He spoke about rewards often. Jesus made clear that our beliefs, thoughts, and actions have consequences. Jesus — better than anyone who has ever lived — was able to explain how positive and negative reinforcement shapes us physically, psychologically, and spiritually.
