What’s on your Thanksgiving menu? How about a healthy diet of thanks and praise?!
Nothing is more purposeful or satisfying! You were made by God (Psalm 119:73) and live to give praise to God (Psalm 119:175).
This Thanksgiving let’s thank and praise God for His Word — nothing tastes better!
“How sweet are your words to my taste, sweeter than honey to my mouth!” – Psalm 119:103
Here are seven ways from Psalm 119 to thank and praise God for His Word this Thanksgiving:
1. Thank God for the truth that guides our life!
“Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path.” – Psalm 119:105
God’s word is a never ending source of eternal truth to keep us on the right path. We are tempted to turn to the left and follow our flesh, the devil, and the world. We are tempted to turn to the right and depend only on ourselves by justifying our actions and pointing to our own righteousness, pretending we can save ourselves. Praise God! The Light of His Word keeps us on the path to life!
2. Thank God for the commands that make us wiser than our enemies!
“Your commands are always with me and make me wiser than my enemies.” – Psalm 119:98
We do have enemies. Other people talk bad about us. Other people intentionally act to harm us. The devil perverts truth and comes after us. Knowing God’s commands protects us from our enemies, whether real or perceived, by knowing how to respond — and especially when not to respond.
3. Thank God for perfect wisdom for our work!
“I have more insight than all my teachers, for I meditate on your statutes.” – Psalm 119:99
Whether we learned much or little in high school, college, or graduate school, whether we had poor teachers or excellent teachers, we have endless insight when we read and trust God’s word to guide us everyday in our work. We know the One in charge! Jesus gives insight for our work through peace, purpose, and power — wiser than all corporate strategy.
4. Thank God for understanding beyond seasoned professionals!
“I have more understanding than the elders, for I obey your precepts.” – Psalm 119:100
How many times have you heard someone experienced say, “that's just the way it is.” Even well meaning leaders can put their knowledge above the truth. Yet, when we obey God's precepts, the endless abundance of God’s wisdom and resources unfolds for us — accomplishing more than we can think of imagine (Psalm 119:93).
5. Thank God for precepts that make us hate going the wrong way!
“I gain understanding from your precepts; therefore I hate every wrong path.” – Psalm 119:104
We hate going the wrong way. It’s frustrating. It makes us have to turn around, go back, and start over. Hiding God’s precepts in our hearts — memorizing them — changes our hearts, minds, souls, informs our actions, and keeps us from making as many mistakes. God’s word shows us we can know the right path — the will of God — by testing how to live and work.
6. Thank God for statutes that are better than all other riches!
“I rejoice in following your statutes as one rejoices in great riches.” – Psalm 119:14
God’s statutes lead us to riches beyond our comprehension. Knowing and embracing God’s statutes leads to great rejoicing in all areas of our life. They teach us that following Jesus is worth every other means — every other treasure — in our life God’s statues reigns over every resource we already have or consider acquiring.
7. Thank God for the law that leads to compassion and hope!
“Let your compassion come to me that I may live, for your law is my delight. You are my refuge and my shield; I have put my hope in your word.” – Psalm 119:13-14
Laws are made to guide and protect people in a way that leads to flourishing. When we follow the law, we are better off. Yet, the law we have never followed perfectly — God’s law — leads to compassion. The reality is that the greatest leader that ever lived perfectly defined our reality and offered hope. Jesus let us know that He came to fulfill the law because we could not, offering us compassion — mercy and grace that leads to life.
God’s Word Is Alive
If the truth of God’s word above sounds more to you like something alive and breathing — something with flesh and blood — than like a bunch of words written thousands of years ago, you are right! God’s word is more than active, more than useful, more than life giving — God’s Word is life — God’s Word is our Savior, Jesus!
“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind.” – John 1:1-4
God’s Word was made flesh (John 1:14) walked around earth for 33 years and now lives in those He loves! The source of all perfect words is Jesus. The source of all life is Jesus. The provider of life that never ends is Jesus.
